Bihać Travel Guide: Gateway to the Una Region

Plan Bihać with practical advice on how many nights, the Una River, national-park excursions, rafting, food, families, transport and border routes.

Published July 18, 2026 15-minute readBy Safari Bosna

Bihać is the easiest urban base for exploring the Una region. It provides restaurants, shops and evening life beside the river, while the national park, waterfalls and rafting routes spread well beyond the city.

Stay three nights if the Una is a major part of the trip.

Safari Bosna tip — Plan by park entrance

“Una National Park” is not one car park. Confirm the exact waterfall, village, rafting start and road before building the day.

Bihać centre and river

The central area provides a gentle arrival day after the long route from Central Bosnia or Sarajevo. Walk established riverside areas, eat locally and keep the first evening light.

Respect barriers and moving water. An urban riverbank is not automatically a swimming area.

Una National Park

Štrbački buk, Martin Brod and village landscapes require separate route planning. Current road, entrance and site conditions should determine the order. Avoid combining every named place into one day.

Use established paths and park instructions. Mine risk makes unmarked countryside and shortcuts unacceptable.

Rafting

Book an established operator and confirm route, meeting point, water conditions, age and health requirements, equipment, insurance, transfer and cancellation. “Family rafting” is not one standard difficulty.

Where to stay

Bihać centre suits services; riverside outskirts suit villas and family space; Kulen Vakuf suits closer park access with fewer services.

Food and practicalities

Bihać provides more reliable dining and shopping than remote park bases. Buy water and snacks before long nature days. Muslim travellers can find familiar food options but should verify halal sourcing when strict confirmation matters.

Keep some KM cash for smaller sites and parking. Mobile coverage can weaken away from populated routes.

A three-day plan

Day 1

Arrival, central Bihać and river walk.

Day 2

One well-planned national-park route.

Day 3

Rafting in suitable conditions, or a slower riverside and village day.

Common mistakes

  • Staying one night.
  • Mapping every park attraction as adjacent.
  • Booking rafting without checking suitability.
  • Leaving meals and fuel until the remote section.
  • Assuming any river access permits swimming.
  • Allowing navigation to cross Croatia without checking documents.

Frequently asked questions

How many days?

Is Bihać in the park?

Can I day-trip from Sarajevo?

Do not. Stay and let the region justify the journey.

Do I need a car?

Yes or arranged transport for the main nature sites.

Is it good for families?

Yes, with careful water and activity planning.

Can I cross Croatia?

Only with passenger and vehicle permission and current border planning.
