Summer opens mountain roads, long evenings and a wide choice of outdoor days. It can also make a stone old town exhausting at mid-afternoon. A good summer itinerary changes rhythm: early walks, shaded lunches, deliberate rest and mountain or water time selected for current conditions.
This ten-day route uses Sarajevo, Herzegovina and Central Bosnia, with a mountain break. It does not promise that natural swimming is available or appropriate.

Safari Bosna tip — Protect 14:00–17:00
In hot weather, use the middle of the afternoon for lunch, transfer, pool time or rest. The itinerary becomes richer when historic streets are visited early and after the heat recedes.
Days 1–2: Sarajevo in summer rhythm
Arrive and walk in the evening. On the full city day, begin Baščaršija early, choose an air-conditioned or naturally cool museum around midday and return outside later.
Confirm room air conditioning rather than assuming it from the property category. Top-floor rooms, west-facing glass and street noise affect summer comfort.
Hydrate and dress modestly at active religious sites without relying on disposable covers. See what to pack.
Day 3: higher ground
Choose Bjelašnica or Trebević. Bjelašnica supports a fuller highland day; Trebević is closer and easier to combine with Sarajevo.
Mountain elevation reduces some heat but does not remove UV exposure, storms or dehydration. Check the forecast and avoid exposed routes when thunderstorms are possible.
Day 4: Neretva transfer
Move south through Konjic with one cool riverside pause. A guided water activity requires proper equipment and a separate schedule. Do not leave people, medication or food in a parked hot car.
Check into Mostar or a countryside base and wait for evening before a longer walk.
Day 5: Mostar early and late
See the Old Bridge area in the morning. Use midday for lunch, museum, accommodation or pool and return in the evening.
The bridge, riverbanks and polished stone require attention. Do not imitate divers or enter the Neretva casually; cold water, current and access conditions are not communicated by air temperature.
Day 6: Herzegovina water and heritage
Start at Blagaj, then choose Kravica Waterfalls or Počitelj.
Kravica can be busy. Check current swimming rules, entry, shade and facilities. At every natural-water stop, supervise children directly and respect closures. If heat or crowding makes the circuit unpleasant, return to the accommodation.
Day 7: highland break
Move toward Blidinje Nature Park or another route-aligned mountain base. Verify the road, accommodation cooling or night temperature, food availability and trail conditions.
Wildfire risk, storms or park restrictions override hiking plans. Never light a fire outside a lawful designated arrangement.
Day 8: Jajce and Pliva Lakes
Explore Jajce early and use the Pliva Lakes area later. The lake is not automatically a supervised swimming facility; use current designated access and local rules.
Day 9: return via Travnik option
Return to Sarajevo, adding Travnik if energy and heat permit. A shaded meal and fortress view can fit, but the town should not become another midday sprint.
Use the final night for packing and a relaxed evening.
Day 10: depart
Keep luggage, medication and electronics out of prolonged heat. Confirm the airport vehicle has sufficient space and functioning air conditioning.
Heat, storms and water
- Carry water but do not rely on one bottle for a full remote day.
- Use sun protection even on mountains.
- Stop strenuous activity during extreme heat.
- Leave exposed ridges before thunderstorms.
- Follow wildfire restrictions.
- Treat rivers, waterfalls and reservoirs individually.
- Use footwear with grip on wet stone.
- Never leave children or animals in a parked vehicle.
Alternative: Una summer extension
For a longer trip, add at least two nights around Una National Park after Jajce. This turns the route into twelve or thirteen days and requires a final Sarajevo return day. Do not compress it into the ten days above.
Common mistakes
- Walking Mostar only at midday.
- Assuming every room has effective air conditioning.
- Treating every lake and waterfall as an approved swimming area.
- Approaching mountain storms as a minor inconvenience.
- Leaving luggage and medication in a hot car.
- Adding Una without adding nights.
- Booking every outdoor activity without a weather alternative.
- Wearing beach clothing into active religious sites.
