Three days is enough to understand why Sarajevo deserves more than a transit stop. It is not enough to “cover Bosnia.” The strongest short trip uses one base, builds the first and last days around flights, and chooses one nearby landscape instead of spending a day driving across the country and back.
This route assumes arrival and departure through Sarajevo. If your three days are all full days, use the optional variation to expand it.

Use this itinerary when:
- it is your first visit;
- Sarajevo is the arrival and departure point;
- you want culture, food and one mountain or park experience;
- you prefer walking to changing hotels;
- you expect jet lag, children or a slower pace.

Day 1: Arrive and meet Sarajevo slowly
Arrange the airport transfer before arrival when the flight is late, the group has substantial luggage or child seats are needed. Check in, pause and take a short orientation walk rather than launching into a full city tour.
Begin in Baščaršija. The compact old commercial centre introduces Ottoman-era streets, crafts, food and active religious life. Continue toward the Latin Bridge and the point where the urban fabric shifts into Austro-Hungarian streets. This short walk establishes the historical sequence without exhausting the first day.

If arrival is late
Eat near the accommodation and sleep. Move Baščaršija to the next morning. An itinerary is not improved by walking tired through a city simply because the schedule says “Day 1.”
Day 2: Sarajevo's layers and Trebević
Use the morning for a structured city walk. A useful sequence connects:
- Baščaršija and the Gazi Husrev-beg complex;
- the Latin Bridge and 1878–1918 context;
- Ferhadija and Austro-Hungarian civic architecture;
- one museum selected for your interests;
- a market, bakery or coffee stop that keeps the day human.

In the afternoon, move to Trebević if weather and current transport conditions suit the group. The mountain offers forest, viewpoints and the Olympic bobsleigh-track landscape. Verify cable-car operations rather than building a fixed timetable around them.
Return for an easy evening. A short trip benefits more from a relaxed Sarajevo night than from another vehicle circuit.
Day 3: Choose one gentle finish
The plan depends on departure time.
Option A: Ilidža and the Spring of the River Bosna
This works with an afternoon or evening flight and is geographically convenient for the airport. Allow for walking, weather and the transfer back to collect luggage.
Option B: Final city morning
Choose this for an earlier flight. Revisit Baščaršija before shops and streets become busier, buy a documented craft, or select one missed museum. Keep luggage storage and airport-transfer time confirmed.
Option C: A nearby mountain morning
Use only with a late departure and a pre-arranged vehicle. Choose one area, not a rushed combination of Bjelašnica, Igman and several villages. Weather and road conditions override the plan.
The Mostar day-trip variation
A Mostar day trip can replace Day 2 or a full Day 3. It offers the Old Bridge area and the Neretva journey, but it cannot also provide a complete Herzegovina circuit without becoming rushed.
Choose it when Mostar is a non-negotiable highlight and all three days are usable. Do not combine Mostar, Blagaj, Počitelj and Kravica Waterfalls in a short winter day or around a same-evening flight. For most travellers, the five-day itinerary is the first route that gives Sarajevo and Herzegovina reasonable space.

- Baščaršija or the old-city edge: maximum walking convenience, with parking and noise to check.
- Central Sarajevo: balanced access to historic and modern areas.
- Ilidža: useful for the airport, larger accommodation and a quieter base, but requires transport into the old city.

Transport
Central Sarajevo is walkable, with public transport and taxis for wider areas. A rental car is unnecessary for the core route and can remain parked for much of the trip. A private driver is useful when the group needs an airport meet-and-greet, child seats, accessible pacing or a flexible nearby excursion.
