Renting a car gives travellers the freedom to combine cities, villages and nature without building the holiday around timetables. Most rental disputes, however, begin before the vehicle reaches the road: unclear insurance, an unsuitable payment card, undeclared border travel or damage that was not recorded at collection.

“Full protection” is a marketing label until the contract explains the excess, glass, tyres, underside, keys, wrong fuel and unauthorised roads.
Licence and driver requirements
The required documents depend on where the licence was issued, the language and script, current recognition rules and company policy.
Before payment, ask the company to confirm:
- whether the original national licence is accepted;
- whether an International Driving Permit or translation is required;
- minimum driver age;
- how long the licence must have been held;
- young or senior driver conditions;
- documents required at the desk;
- whether every additional driver must be present.
An International Driving Permit is normally used with the original licence, not instead of it. Generic online advice cannot confirm an individual licence.
Payment card and deposit
Confirm:
- credit or debit card acceptance;
- card network;
- cardholder name requirement;
- deposit amount or calculation;
- whether funds are charged or pre-authorised;
- currency conversion;
- release timing after return;
- what happens if the card limit is insufficient.
A prepaid booking voucher does not necessarily remove the security deposit. The main driver's card should have sufficient available funds after normal holiday spending.
Understand the insurance
Ask the company to explain the contract rather than relying on product initials.
Identify:
- third-party liability arrangement;
- collision damage responsibility;
- theft responsibility;
- maximum excess for each event;
- excluded parts or circumstances;
- glass, tyres, wheels, roof and underside;
- lost keys and wrong fuel;
- towing and roadside assistance;
- police-report requirements;
- authorised roads and countries;
- administrative or loss-of-use charges.
Third-party protection sold by a booking platform may reimburse the traveller after the rental company charges them. Understand who handles the claim, what evidence is needed and whether the deposit is still blocked.
No insurance should be described as removing every responsibility.
Choose the vehicle by the real load
Small car
Useful for couples, paved itineraries and city parking. Check whether the boot hides all luggage.
Family car
Choose after installing the required child seats. Three nominal rear seats may not accept three restraints comfortably.
Seven-seat vehicle
Ask for luggage capacity with all seats raised. Passenger capacity and holiday-bag capacity are different figures.
SUV or four-wheel drive
Not necessary for the normal paved Sarajevo–Mostar–Jajce–Bihać route. A specific winter or rural access plan may justify it, but tyres and driver skill still matter more than appearance.
Automatic transmission
Reserve explicitly. Do not assume an “or similar” category guarantees the required transmission unless the confirmation says so.
Child seats and equipment
Reserve restraints before arrival and provide the child's details requested by the company. Confirm the category, availability and fee. Inspect condition and installation at collection.
For winter, ask what tyres and additional equipment the exact vehicle will carry. Current legal requirements and mountain needs must be checked close to travel.
GPS, additional drivers, Wi-Fi devices and one-way return can add charges. Price the complete booking rather than the headline daily rate.
Cross-border permission
Declare every country, including a short transit. Obtain written confirmation of:
- permitted countries;
- cross-border fee;
- vehicle authorisation;
- insurance documents;
- roadside assistance abroad;
- ferry or territorial exclusions;
- one-way restrictions;
- what must be shown at the border.
The rental company's permission is separate from each passenger's entry requirements. Review the later border-crossing chapter before a multi-country route.
Airport, city and one-way collection
Airport collection is convenient after a daytime flight. A city office can be better when the first days are entirely in Sarajevo and the car would sit in paid parking.
Confirm the desk location. “Airport rental” can mean an in-terminal counter, a nearby office or a meet-and-greet service.
For a one-way rental, obtain the return address, operating hours and fee. International one-way rental may be unavailable or expensive even when cross-border driving is permitted.
Inspect before leaving
Use adequate light. Record:
- every side and bumper;
- wheels and tyres;
- windscreen and other glass;
- roof where visible;
- interior and upholstery;
- odometer;
- fuel or charge level;
- warning lights;
- supplied equipment.
Ensure damage is marked on the official record, not only stored on the traveller's phone. Test lights, wipers, climate control and child-seat installation. Ask for another vehicle if a warning or safety issue is unresolved.
Fuel, charging and mileage
Understand whether the policy is full-to-full, prepaid or another arrangement. Photograph the gauge at collection and return, and keep the final receipt.
Check mileage limits and charges. A generous daily allowance can still be exceeded on a long multi-region itinerary.
For an electric vehicle, verify connector, reliable charging locations, payment access and property permission. Do not assume a household socket at accommodation is safe or authorised for charging.
During the rental
Keep the contract, vehicle documents and assistance number available offline. Follow the company's instructions after warning lights, damage, breakdown or a collision.
Do not arrange repairs independently unless authorised. Many contracts require police documentation for damage or collision claims, even when another person offers to settle privately.
Only named drivers should drive. Unauthorised drivers, prohibited roads or undeclared border use can affect cover.
Returning the car
Allow time for fuel, traffic, inspection and airport procedures. At return:
- use the correct location;
- meet the fuel or charge policy;
- remove belongings;
- photograph the vehicle and dashboard;
- obtain a return or condition record;
- keep fuel, parking and contract receipts;
- monitor the deposit release.
