Two weeks should make the trip calmer, not twice as crowded. The advantage is the ability to stay three nights in a region, absorb poor weather, choose a market morning over another attraction and give Una or Herzegovina a real rest day.
This route assumes thirteen nights, a Sarajevo round trip and travel between spring and autumn. It uses four regional bases plus a final Sarajevo night.

Safari Bosna tip — Schedule two blank half-days
Do not assign them in advance. Use them for weather, laundry, a longer meal, children's energy or the place you unexpectedly want to understand better.
Days 1–3: Sarajevo with room to choose
Day 1 is arrival and orientation. Day 2 connects the Ottoman commercial core, Austro-Hungarian centre and one museum. Day 3 can be Trebević, Ilidža, Bjelašnica or another city theme.
Three nights allow interests to separate. A visitor focused on the siege can use two institutions without turning the entire stay into a trauma circuit. A family can use the third day outdoors. A food-focused traveller can add a market, bakery and coffee practice without rushing.
Stay in one Sarajevo property. See where to stay in Sarajevo.
Day 4: Neretva transfer
Move to Mostar through Konjic or Jablanica. With two weeks, a specialist bunker visit, rafting trip or long lunch can be given proper time—but each changes the transfer and should be booked deliberately.
Reach Mostar for the evening and settle for three nights.
Days 5–6: Mostar and wider Herzegovina
Use one morning and evening for Mostar. Build the rest around two clusters rather than one overloaded circuit:
- Blagaj and Počitelj;
- Kravica and a slow countryside meal;
- Stolac, Radimlja and deeper medieval context;
- a villa, pool or river half-day in hot weather.
The second day can remain flexible. A two-week guest gains more from returning to a favourite street at dusk than from adding a town simply because it is nearby.
Day 7: one landscape overnight
A single stay around Blidinje Nature Park, Jablanica or another route-aligned location can break the journey north. It is the only one-night base in the plan and should have a specific purpose: hiking, a cabin, a lake landscape or a pre-arranged activity.
Do not use a remote mountain road without a live weather and access check. Remove this overnight if packing fatigue outweighs the experience; travel directly to Jajce and add the night there.
Days 8–9: Central Bosnia
Base near Jajce. Explore the town, waterfall, fortress and one historical institution without forcing them into an arrival afternoon. Give Pliva Lakes and the watermills a separate slower period.
Use the second day for Travnik, a regional village or rest. Travnik fits best when it aligns with the arrival or departure direction; avoid repeating roads solely to collect it.
Day 10: transfer to the Una region
Travel to Bihać with rest and meal stops. Arrive before dark, check the following day's park meeting point and understand whether the accommodation is in town, beside the river or near a particular entrance.
The phrase “Una region” covers a large area. Map actual driving, not marketing distance.
Days 11–12: Una with one active and one flexible day
Use one full day for Una National Park: a selected waterfall area, park landscape and possibly an authorised guided activity.
Keep the other day for one of the following:
- a second, slower park area;
- rafting when current conditions and ability suit it;
- a Bihać town and riverside day;
- rest at the accommodation;
- poor-weather recovery.
Two full days is what makes the long western journey worthwhile.
Day 13: return to Sarajevo
Return without treating the road as a final attraction marathon. A Travnik stop can fit if it was omitted earlier and does not compromise arrival. Check in, repack and enjoy one final meal.
Day 14: departure
Use an airport transfer matched to the flight and group. Keep any last shopping near the accommodation. The grand tour ends better with margin than with one more mountain.
Alternative: Sutjeska instead of Una
Travellers prioritising hiking, Sutjeska National Park and Perućica should rebuild the middle of the route around an authorised local guide and southeastern access. Do not add Sutjeska on top of Una without removing Central Bosnia or several rest days.
Perućica access requires current authorisation and appropriate guidance. A two-week label does not remove safety and conservation constraints.
Accommodation strategy
Mix city stays with one experience-led property, but do not choose every night for novelty. Laundry, kitchens, parking, luggage access, air conditioning and quiet can matter more by the second week than a dramatic photograph.
Use booking accommodation in Bosnia and confirm every facility directly.
Common mistakes
- Adding more bases simply because the trip is longer.
- Trying to include Una and Sutjeska without removing another region.
- Saving all recovery time for Day 13.
- Choosing a one-night mountain stop without checking the road or purpose.
- Booking remote stays before mapping park entrances and following transfers.
- Treating a cross-border extension as a free day trip.
- Assuming the spring-to-autumn route works unchanged in winter.
Frequently asked questions
Is two weeks too long?
No. It creates depth, recovery and weather flexibility.
How many bases?
Four principal regional bases plus a final Sarajevo night; a fifth only with a clear purpose.
Should I visit every national park?
No. Choose Una or Sutjeska according to the route and activity priorities.
Where do rest days belong?
In Herzegovina and Una, after transfers and before the final return.
Can I add another country?
Yes as a genuine extension with border, transport and night allocation adjusted.
Is the route year-round?
The concept is adaptable, but the written cross-country sequence is not a fixed winter plan.
