Ten days is the first trip length that can include the Una region without treating western Bosnia as a one-night detour. The route still requires discipline: four regions, four principal bases and transfer days that are allowed to be transfer days.
This plan assumes nine nights, a Sarajevo round trip and travel outside severe winter conditions. Reverse or shorten it when flights and season require.

Road distance, traffic, weather and an unexpected delay can turn a beautiful route into a missed departure. Day 9 exists to return calmly, not to squeeze in another region.
Days 1–2: Sarajevo
Use Day 1 for arrival and an old-city orientation. Day 2 should connect Baščaršija, the Austro-Hungarian centre and one carefully chosen museum or viewpoint. Add Trebević only when the group wants a mixed city-and-nature day.
Two nights gives a sound introduction but leaves choices. History-focused travellers may replace the mountain with museum depth. Families may replace a difficult museum with Ilidža or open space. See the Sarajevo guide.
Day 3: the Neretva journey
Travel toward Mostar by train for a direct scenic transfer or by road for selected stops. If driving, choose Konjic or Jablanica as the main stop.
An adventure or Tito's bunker visit requires advance arrangements and changes the day's pace. Do not present either as a spontaneous add-on. Reach Mostar in time for an evening walk.
Day 4: Mostar and Herzegovina
Explore the Old Bridge area early. Then choose a combination suited to season:
- Blagaj and Počitelj for heritage;
- Blagaj and Kravica for heritage and water;
- Stolac and Radimlja for archaeology and medieval history;
- a slower Mostar day plus countryside accommodation for rest.

Day 5: cross to Central Bosnia
Move through the interior toward Jajce. Depending on the live route, season and interests, the day may include Ramsko Lake, a meal stop or a short town visit. Avoid remote scenic detours after heavy rain, snow or road warnings.
This day will involve meaningful road time. Do not also promise a full hike, waterfall circuit and evening fortress tour. Check into the Jajce area and walk only if energy and daylight remain.
Day 6: Jajce and the Pliva landscape
Give Jajce a full morning: waterfall viewpoints, fortress landscape and one museum or historical focus. Continue to Pliva Lakes and the watermills for a slower afternoon.
Travnik can be added today only if the group is comfortable with additional driving and returns or continues logically. Otherwise, preserve it for a future route. Ten days provides breadth; it does not make every nearby name mandatory.
Day 7: Jajce to the Una region
Travel northwest toward Bihać. Use a meal and rest stop rather than assembling several minor attractions. Arrive early enough to walk beside the Una, confirm the next day's park arrangements and settle into a riverside, countryside or town base.
Choose accommodation based on the exact park entrance and planned activity, not the phrase “near Una.” The Una accommodation guide explains the trade-offs.
Day 8: Una National Park
One complete day allows a selected waterfall area, river landscape and optional authorised activity. The park is not one single viewpoint, and access between locations requires planning.
Use the Una National Park guide to verify current entrances, roads, water-based activities and conservation rules. Rafting or another guided activity should replace part of the sightseeing day, not be added on top of every waterfall.
Return for a second night in the region.
Day 9: return to Sarajevo
Treat the cross-country return as the main plan. Stop for food and rest and add Travnik only when route, daylight and energy genuinely allow.
The final Sarajevo night protects the flight and creates space for laundry, repacking, a last meal and any shopping. It is not wasted time.
Day 10: depart
Keep the day close to the city and airport. Confirm the transfer, luggage and international check-in requirements. A final coffee or market walk is suitable with a late flight; a mountain excursion is not.
Route variations
More Herzegovina
Remove one Central Bosnia night and add Stolac, Blidinje or a villa day. Check seasonal roads and avoid making the next transfer to Una excessively long.
More Sarajevo
Remove Jajce Night 2, visit Travnik selectively while travelling, and add a third opening night in Sarajevo.
No Una region
Use the days for Sutjeska, mountain stays or slower Central Bosnia. Do not replace Una with several equally distant destinations.
Open-jaw departure
If continuing toward Zagreb or the Adriatic, the route direction may change. Cross-border vehicle permissions, queues and one-way rental policies require live planning.
Transport
The complete route is easiest with a private driver or a confident self-driver. Public transport can link principal towns but does not naturally reproduce the scenic transfer stops and park day. A hybrid plan—train Sarajevo to Mostar, then arranged road transport—can work when luggage and handoffs are explicit.
Review driving in Bosnia and Herzegovina before selecting a rental based only on price.

- Giving Una only one night.
- Adding Sutjeska or several Sarajevo mountains to the same circuit.
- Scheduling Bihać to Sarajevo on flight morning.
- Treating Days 5, 7 and 9 as empty space.
- Choosing remote accommodation without mapping the next day's entrance.
- Adding a rafting day without removing sightseeing.
- Using this summer-oriented circuit unchanged in winter.
- Crossing a border or returning a one-way car without checking conditions.
