The first objective after a loss is containment. Protect the person, block what can be misused, create a written record and then rebuild the itinerary. Searching indefinitely can allow a missing card, phone or passport to create a larger problem.
First-response table
| Problem | First actions |
|---|---|
| Passport | Police report, embassy or consulate, carrier and Border Police checks |
| Bank card | Freeze or cancel, review transactions, preserve issuer reference |
| Phone | Lock or erase, block SIM, secure email and authentication |
| Airline luggage | Report before leaving, obtain reference, retain baggage tag |
| Hotel or transport failure | Secure immediate alternative, document, contact provider and insurer |
Safari Bosna tip — Separate the backups
A spare card, passport copy and insurer number do not help when stored in the same missing bag. Keep secure digital access and one physical backup separate.
Lost or stolen passport
Foreign nationals are expected to report the loss, destruction or theft of a travel document to the competent police station. Ask for the report or certificate available for the next steps.
Then contact the embassy or consulate responsible for the traveller's nationality. It may be outside Bosnia and Herzegovina. Confirm:
- application and identity evidence;
- photographs or appointment requirements;
- fees and payment;
- where the document is issued;
- whether the airline or land carrier accepts it;
- whether Border Police requires additional evidence.
A scan or police report is not permission to cross a border. Protect the final itinerary until the document and carrier requirements are settled.
Lost bank card or cash
Use the bank's official app or number to freeze or cancel the card. Review pending transactions and record the case number. Contact police for theft or fraud and follow issuer instructions.
Avoid accepting money transfers from strangers. Use a known family contact, bank or established transfer service and understand identification requirements before funds are sent.
The money guide explains prevention.
Lost phone
From a trusted device:
- mark the phone lost or lock it;
- locate it only when retrieval is safe;
- block the SIM with the provider;
- protect email, banking and password-manager access;
- replace compromised authentication methods;
- report theft to police and insurer.
Do not confront a suspected thief or follow a tracking pin into an unsafe location. A pin can be delayed or inaccurate.
Missing luggage
For checked airline baggage, report the problem before leaving the baggage area and obtain the carrier's reference. For a bus or transfer, contact the operator immediately with the ticket, route, vehicle, time and bag description.
Retain receipts for reasonable essential purchases and follow the carrier and insurer claim rules. Do not state a valuable item's cost without evidence.
Booking or accommodation failure
Secure immediate safety first: a lawful place to stay, transport away from an unsafe situation or contact with the group. Then preserve:
- the listing and written confirmation;
- promised inclusions;
- messages and call times;
- photographs relevant to the issue;
- replacement receipts.
Give the provider a reasonable written opportunity to fix a non-dangerous problem. Contact the booking platform, payment provider and insurer through official channels where appropriate.
Missed flight or connection
Contact the operating carrier or ticket issuer, not only the search website. Ask for available rebooking and written disruption evidence. Notify the transfer and accommodation so one delay does not create additional no-shows.
Police, insurer and consular roles
Police record crime and loss and address immediate danger. An insurer applies the policy. A consulate assists its nationals within its powers. A tour company solves contracted travel services. None automatically replaces the others.
